Ok – many of these tracks are interesting and creative and lyrical in many different ways. Interesting instruments, experimental forms, pleasant voices. But somehow, to me, most of the tracks seemed repetitive or boring or annoying, even with the different sounds or unusual rhythms. Maybe it’s just me, but most just seemed to keep repeating the same “hook” all the way through the song, whatever that “hook” was. I would start each song and get interested, but then get tired of it before it was 1/3 over, (though I did listen all the way through to be fair). However, I did like track 1 quite a lot. I also appreciated that the notes were musical and I don’t think anybody screamed. Some may enjoy these quite a bit, but I guess not me, much.

Grab this one, folks. This sampler is going to cost me some money because some of the artists are now necessary summer listening for me. I checked out all the bands and, by way of gratitude to Side One Dummy and Amazon, I’ll pass it on:
1. “Requiem For A Dying Song” by Flogging Molly, the great Celtic punk rock band. This is from their “Live At The Greek Theatre” album released March 2010. A rollicking start for this great sampler.
2. “The Spirit Of Jazz” by folk-punk rockers The Gaslight Anthem from American Slang released June 2010. This month’s Uncut Magazine gave this album 5 stars and declared it their album of the month. Big Cheese also gave it 5 stars.
3. “Lightning In A Bottle” by Audra Mae from her debut album “The Happiest Lamb” released May 2010. This folk rocker is the great-niece of Judy Garland and has definitely inherited the family’s amazing chops. This album will be my first purchase from this sampler.
4. “Clap Your Hands” by The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band”, a rural blues band that calls Indiana home. This song is from “The Wages” released May 25, 2010 and immediately charting at #2 on Billboard’s Blues Chart.
5. “Love It To Life” by Jesse Malin And The St. Mark’s Social Disco Ghetto from “Love It To Life”, their April 2010 Side One Dummy debut. Jesse Malin is a veteran punk rocker whose former bands were Heart Attack and D Generation. Seems he collaborates with Ryan Adams and has been compared to Bruce Springsteen.
6. “The Trench” by the exceptional indie rocker Chuck Ragan. This is from 2009’s “Gold Country”. Amazon has already gifted us with “Rotterdam” from that album. I love both songs and will purchase the album.
7. “Salt And Sand” from “White Rabbit”, an independent project of Flogging Molly bassist Nathen Maxwell and The Original Bunny Gang. This folk rock song is melodic and beautiful.
8. “Heart BPM” by folk-punk rockers Fake Problems from “It’s Great To Be Alive”.
9. “The System” by The Black Pacific with vocalist/guitarist Jim Lindberg from the band’s self-titled album to be released in September.
10. “We Are The One” by Anti-Flag from the punk-rock album “The People Or The Gun”.
11. “We Are All We Have” by hardcore street punk-rockers The Casualties.
12. “Basement Royalty” by Broadway Calls on their punk-rock album “Good Views, Bad News”.
13. “Describing The Sky” by Big D And The Kids Table, from this third wave ska band’s “Fluent In Stroll” which is said to refer to the band’s musical direction to ska, reggae, and soul.
Enjoy!

If you are a fan of the “Garage Sound” pick this up. After listening to all of the tracks, I am definately going go search out more music from these bands.
What do you have to loose.

A lot of the time these samplers come out and there are one or two or zero songs that are found to be interesting. Not so on this Alive Records – Natural Sound Sampler. I enjoyed listening to it from start to finish.
Dan Auerbach, singer and guitarist for The Black Keys took notice, as did I, of the band from San Antonio, Hacienda. I say watch these guys closely. If they can keep it all together and keep writing original, catchy, tunes like are on their debut, Loud is the Night, there is no reason in the world we should not hear more from this young band. The San Antonio Express said, “Hacienda is influenced by an array of music, most of it from the ’50s and ’60s, Hacienda crafts songs in which power pop meets Americana”.Dan Auerbach, an Alive alum as well, produced the record which was recorded in Mr. Auerbach’s analog studio in Akron, Ohio.
Another favorite of mine on the sampler was Leave the Sun Behind, by the Buffalo Killer. They have a very retro sound to them that could take you back to the late 60’s sound of Canned Heat or The James Gang. I love how the song seems to change tempo along the way. Keep a close eye on this band as well.
The very next band is The Nerves performing When You Find Out, which will certainly remind you of early Beatles tunes. It’s a very catch tune but look out for the live stuff should you desire to download it.
A Million Years, performed by Brimstone Howl, is one of my favorites on the band but you will need to be a fan of rock-a-billy and garage style punk to enjoy it. Just the right amount of reverb in the vocals and the simplistic guitar lunging out at you periodically adds a pseudo-psychedelic tone to the song.
Wash It by Left Lane Cruiser is a road song at its best with hard driving slide guitar weaving its way through the entire song. Great song, and appears to be recorded live with virtually no mixing what so ever.
That is what I love about this sampler. It seems to have all been recorded in that manner. Live. Check it out. You will probably do as I did and download many if not all of the songs from each band. Just listen to the samples first. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Just on a first spin basis, this sampler has allot of good energy. Its got a gritty blues rock garage feel to it. quite a variety on this collection. Brimstone Howl reminds me of a Rockabilly Ramones outfit, The Nerves are a fresh throw back to 1960’s rock and roll, kind of like The Beatles or The Monkies. Thomas Function reminds me a little of the pixies with a more catchy rock and roll rhythm. Left Lane Cruiser is another cool rocking dirty blues band. I would liken it to a White Stripes/Canned Heat/Eagles of Death Metal -ESK take on the blues, a foot stompin, Slide picking, cowbell rockin, driving Blues, awesome track. Black Diamond Heavies is along the same lines as Left Lane Cruiser, A great hard rock take on the blues. they fire up the grit on all cylinders. I honestly wasn’t too big on the first three tracks, but every track after that are OUTSTANDING works that Deserve a spin.
Its a Free Download… GET IT ALREADY!!!!!

With free music, my usual position is “you get what you pay for”. But this sampler really surprised me! There’s some good stuff on here, and I liked the Nerves, Black Diamond Heavies and Left Lane Cruiser enough to actually buy their records. Your free song sampler worked, Alive Records!

Amazon has recently been offering several label samplers that are quite excellent. Gone are the days of poor production and horrible static noise (when it wasn’t intended) for indie/alternative music. Several of these bands I had never heard of but thanks to their singles I have already looked up (Desoto Jones, Track a Tiger and Late Night Condition). As long as this is free–I highly recommend people of all musical tastes to get this.
Even when it turns not free tho–I think it’s well worth it as long as you like upbeat alternative bordering on punk sometimes music (altho there are other music genres on here like indie pop-the majority are alternative rock).

This sampler is a good one. Amazon did good by putting this freebie, “Deep Elm Sampler No.9 We Dream Alone” up for grabs. It has a good selection of music over the span of 18 songs. All songs are clear and smooth with out being garbled and static ridden which they sometimes are. Good songs, good price, you can’t miss.

I have downloaded a few of the freebies on Amazon…I like to listen to new music and see if I can find something fun. I have to tell you…this album really surprised me. There are quite a few great songs that I wasn’t expecting. I haven’t kept many other free albums I’ve downloaded but I will definitely keep this one! A few songs I really enjoy are: What’s in it for?, Closet Astrologer, Heaven and Earth & Hide it away…and I haven’t even listened to the whole thing! Let me know what you think. Thank you Amazon!

This sampler is chalk full of great music by Sargent House bands. It has something for everyone, and in the end – I guarantee you’ll find a new band or sound you really enjoy.

I came across Sargent House last year with the release of Maps & Atlases ‘You And Me And The Mountain’ EP, and quickly fell in love with their entire roster of bands. This sampler highlights some of my favorite songs from each, and encapsulates all that Sargent House has to offer. Brilliant, unique and thought-provoking music that should be heard by the masses. The best aspect is that its absolutely FREE! Sargent House is sure to become one of the best indie labels out there, do yourself a favor and check this out!

The musicianship really isn’t up to par with the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn or Joe Satriani, but it’s free and a couple of songs are ok. I’ll burn a CD for road trips, but none of the tracks will make it to my mp3 player.
Really I should have given it just two stars.

I had heard of Shout Out Louds, Spoon, and The Clientele, but I had never heard any songs by them (aside from Spoon’s “Underdog,” of course) so I jumped at the opportunity to check out these tracks. It isn’t the best sampler I’ve ever found here (that honor belongs to “Barsuk Records: 2009 Amazon Digital Sampler”) but there is a good mix of songs that I enjoyed immediately and songs that I know will grow on me easily.
The review by fle-pics already gave the best advice though, just listen to “the 30-second samples and if it sounds like your kind of music, then … you won’t be disappointed.” I can’t really say it better! Good call.
